1. Stay active

Staying active and building exercise into your daily routine can help you maintain your independence as you age. Keeping fit will also reduce your risk of falls and chronic disease, help you manage existing medical problems and help you recover faster from illness. Start by speaking with your doctor about the type of exercise you would like to engage in (and the frequency) to ensure that it’s sustainable if you have existing health conditions.

2. Pick something fun

Pick activities that are achievable and interest you. It’s easier to stay motivated if you are doing something you enjoy. If you can find people that will join you it can help to motivate and has added social benefits. Keep in mind there are different types of exercise with different outcomes. Stretching activities to increase flexibility and reduce blood pressure, weight or lifting activity to improve muscle and bone strength, and cardio to assist with heart health and metabolism.

3.  Aim for small gains!

Don’t expect instant results to begin with as the bigger changes will happen over time without you noticing. Listen to your body and try not to overexert yourself to avoid injury. Stop and seek medical advice if you experience chest pain, extreme breathlessness, or dizziness.
