We were recently privileged to attend the opening night of CrossRoad Arts performance of Breathe In which was held in Mackay on 29th June.

Breathe In was performed by two non-verbal artists of Brenden Borellini who is Deafblind and Georgia Cranko who has right-sided hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Both performers came together to present a multimedia insight into living, surviving, and thriving in a world where they use alternate forms of communication. The performance showed both the light and dark sides of living with communication difficulties including themes of vulnerability, frustration as well as strength and determination. The performance was Auslan interpreted, live described, and included written captions throughout its entirety.

Brenden and Georgia used different forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to not only assist in writing the show, but during the performance.

The messages and methods used in this performance were emotional, powerful and gave the audience an insight into the world of living without verbal communication and for Brenden, without verbal communication as well as vision or hearing. This world is one where Speech Pathologists are proud to work in and one where we aim to give our participants a method of communication in their everyday life.
